Emerging Learning technologies: all fit for customs and tax learning?

Emerging technologies hold the promise of changing the way people learn and interact, being part of fully immersive virtual environments where learners can freely train just like in the real world, being coached by virtual trainers and receiving a completely personalised learning experience based on what we like and need. 3 emerging technologies in talent development are in the forefront:

  1. Augmented Reality (AR): Augmented Reality works by recognising pre-defined visual patterns through a video camera. Such visual patterns can include QR codes or objects, like a device or a door. Once a pre-defined object is recognised through the camera, a predefined multimedia overlay is added to the video.
  2. Virtual Reality (VR): VR offers the potential of having trainees fully immersed in a virtual training environment that emulates the real world with great accuracy, where trainees can interact with objects and people just like they would in the real world can truly change the way people learn (example: VR headsets).
  3. Mixed Reality (MR): MR builds on both VR and AR, combining virtual worlds with the real world  (example: 3D googles).
All three technologies are also called Extended Reality (XR).

This technology raises many unknowns, apart from the high cost for hardware and development.
